ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Kaja Irwin is a Winnipeg-born dancer, choreographer, and dance educator. After completing her B.A. in Political Science and deciding to pursue a career in dance, Kaja studied in the Professional Training Program offered at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, developing her love of both jazz and the Calgary dance community. Kaja loves to explore movement and collaborations across art forms, including: working with Calgary jazz drummer Nate Chiang to develop improvised pieces for the stage (most recently presented in Fluid Fest’s Physical Therapy Cabaret 2022), creating solo jazz/mask/puppetry work in both short film and stage formats, collaborating with jewelry artist Corey Moranis in a short art film, developing her love of costuming and styling, and choreographing music videos for Winnipeg band, Royal Canoe.

Irwin is in her ninth season as a company dancer with DJD. She is honoured to have choreographed for Alberta Dance Theatre for her fourth season this year and continues to love teaching at studios around the city of Calgary. Kaja feels very inspired and grateful to be a part of this Calgary arts community.
