ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Jasmine Atay, a talented emerging artist from Calgary, discovered her passion for art at a young age. After attending classes at AUArts to refine her skills, she continued her artistic journey with additional courses at Alberta Printmakers. While she previously focused on paintings and drawings in ink, acrylic, or watercolor, Jasmine's recent practice has shifted to digital art, allowing her greater flexibility and time to explore themes related to people and their history. She employs color, symbology, typography, and sometimes realism to conceptualize her digital art before bringing it to life through traditional printmaking techniques like silk-screening, lithography, or letterpress. For Jasmine, printmaking is the perfect medium that strikes a balance between graphic design and artistic expression.

Her current work, Halo Halo, is a multimedia celebration of the stories of first-generation Filipino/Canadians and their journey to Canada. Collaborating with fellow artist Sam Mendoza under the name D.I.T.R.O, Jasmine combines her portraiture skills and silk-screening expertise to craft deeply personal and meaningful pieces. Inspired by her heritage and family, she seeks to deepen her understanding of her Filipino roots and impart this meaningful knowledge on to her daughter. For Jasmine, the opportunity to explore her heritage creatively is a lifelong dream come true.
