ARTIST STATEMENT:

Glass is an alluring material. When molten I can form glass into sculptures enriched in color and form. Applying color to the glass is a process I most enjoy. I use color to enhance the visual effects of the glass. Using different color applications allows the sculptures to set themes. Space has inspired me from science fiction to recent planetary science discoveries. Space Eggs is a series of six sculptures. Glass eggs nests above black columns, and the fragility of the Egg is elevated to a height of a certain topple. Grinding each component ensures the connections are snug and forever stable. Space Eggs is made from rich colors with an elegant form to evoke a sense of wonder about the tale of the Eggs.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:

Zachary Cardinal graduated from Au Arts in 2020 with a Major in Glass. Zach is inspired by science fiction movies, literature and games, and by his childhood growing up in Northern Alberta. His work is strongly driven by storytelling using glass as the medium of sharing. Zach continues working with glass by creating production glass items and assisting others with their creations in the glass studio. The Space Egg exhibition is Zach’s first conceptual work which uses color to set themes that a narrative resides in. Form and color illustrate stories for the viewer.
