Government Investment

All levels of government and their respective organizations play a vital role in the cultural, civic and economic life of Canadians. Arts, culture and heritage represent more than $56 billion in the Canadian economy and close to 655,000 jobs in sectors such as film and video, broadcasting, music, publishing, archives, performing arts, heritage institutions, festivals and celebrations.

Arts Commons gratefully acknowledges the generous financial investment by the following government departments and organizations:

Canadian Heritage

  • The Canada Arts Presentation Fund (CAPF) provides financial assistance to organizations that professionally present arts festivals or performing arts series (arts presenters) and organizations that offer support to arts presenters.
  • The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund (CCSF) provides financial assistance for the improvement of physical conditions for arts, heritage, culture and creative innovation. The Fund supports renovation and construction projects, the acquisition of specialized equipment and feasibility studies related to cultural spaces. 

Canada Revenue Agency

  • The Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) for small businesses is a joint program between the Federal government and Provincial/Territorial governments which provided rent relief for eligible small businesses experiencing financial difficulties arising from the impact of COVID-19.
  • The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) is a wage subsidy program offered until June 2021 to qualifying employers who have seen a drop in revenue due to COVID-19. CEWS is meant to prevent more job losses by helping you keep your employees on payroll, enabling eligible organizations to re-hire workers, and facilitating a return to normal operations.

Culture, Multiculturalism and the Status of Women

  • Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) is a public agency and a provincial corporation of the Government of Alberta with a mandate to support and contribute to the development of the arts in Alberta. AFA provides grant funding to artists and art organizations to encourage the growth and development of the arts sector. 
  • The Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) provides financial assistance to acquire, build, purchase, repair, renovate, upgrade or expand sports, recreational, cultural or other related public-use community facilities.

Community Services

  • The Civic Partners Program (CPP) provides financial assistance to benefit from civic partners’ knowledge and expertise to deliver more effective programs and services in targeted areas, develop and advance strategies, and construct and manage assets. Investment in civic partners strengthen economic development, tourism, convention services, cultural attractions, events, and library services; connect communities; support vulnerable Calgarians; and offer Calgarians a wide range of sport, recreation, conservation, arts and cultural opportunities.
  • The Emergency Resiliency Fund (ERF) provides one-time emergency funding to help non-profit organizations, including The City’s civic and community partners, to continue to serve Calgarians during the response phase of the COVID-19 pandemic event by ensuring adequate services are available, and to pursue partner capacity to support Calgary’s social, economic and cultural recovery from the event.
