Artist Bio
Levin Ifko is an emerging interdisciplinary artist based in Mohkinstsis (Calgary AB). They received their BFA in Media Arts (2022) from the Alberta University of the Arts (formerly ACAD).
As a Queer and Transmaculine visual artist, they blend his practices in photography, fibre, sculpture – creating work that is playful and intimate. Writing plays a large role in his artwork utilizing words to conjure queer memories, advocate for trans rights, and to imagine possible futures. Over the last few years, Levin has been invited to show their work across Alberta as part of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program, Exposure Photography Festival, at The New Gallery, and in a group show of Trans and Non-Binary artists at Stride Gallery. Their first solo exhibition, Tender to the Flame, is currently up at the Esker Foundation Project Space.
Levin is hugely passionate about music and spent most of their teenage years performing at open mics and writing music with friends, before starting university. They have taken a break from this area of their life while completing their BFA and working in the field of visual arts, but in this time, they have continued to write music, learn diy music production, and have collaborated on the writing and producing process with several friends. Looking forward, music is an area that Levin is excited to be pursuing once again.
Levin is involved with the arts at a local and national scale. This includes regular writing about art exhibitions for the online publication Akimbo as well as collaborating with other artists to create audio, video, and design projects. Behind the scenes, Levin works as an arts administrator and has designed and facilitated multiple arts programs surrounding topics of mental health, LGBTQ2S+ artistic practices, video and performance art, and more. Above all, they believe in making all forms of art as a way of caring for ourselves and connecting with our communities.
