Artist Statement for Etuaptmumk

Oki nisto nitaniko Sakoyiina, meaning “hello, my name is Hail Boy.” I am a Two-Spirited Blackfoot artist from Siksika Nation in Treaty 7 territory, currently living in Mohkinssiss (Calgary). My work spans multiple media, using technology to explore my heritage through a modern perspective. Blackfoot culture and personal identity are central to my practice, and they continuously evolve as I navigate the intersection of tradition and innovation.

My art embodies a dialogue between the past and the present, blending anti-colonial intentions with a deep respect for tradition. Technology, whether sound, video, or performance, serves as an extension of the present, reinforcing the idea that Indigenous art is not only rooted in history but also firmly relevant today.

Each piece in my practice is a means of exploring and understanding my relationship with heritage, community, and history. Through my work, I challenge the expectations of Indigenous art, pushing boundaries while honoring cultural traditions. This process allows me to breathe new life into my Blackfoot heritage and present it through a lens of personal and contemporary exploration.
