Art in August: Your Guide to Calgary's Free Arts Scene
Kiani Evans, Jul 18, 2025
One of the great joys of Calgary's summer is the way art spills out of traditional venues and into our public spaces. From galleries to live music and festivals, our city proves that world-class artistic experiences don't always come with a price tag. So, whether you're a seasoned artist seeking fresh inspiration or simply looking to immerse yourself in Calgary's creative spirit, grab your calendar and get ready to fill it with some truly unforgettable (and free!) moments, all happening just a stone's throw from what will soon be Werklund Centre.
First up, keep your eyes peeled for the BUMP Festival, running from August 1 to 18. While the larger festival includes ticketed events, the magic of BUMP lies in its free, self-guided mural tours. This is a fantastic opportunity to see artists in their element, witness the creative process unfold, and explore our city's urban landscape through a new lens. It's an ever-evolving outdoor gallery that constantly reminds us of the power of art to transform our surroundings. Want to go deeper? Their paid, guided tours delve even further into the history and stories behind the artworks.
For those who appreciate the rhythm of live music under the open sky, Music in the Plaza at Heritage Park continues through August. Every Wednesday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, talented emerging bands take the stage in Heritage Plaza. This is the perfect mid-week escape to unwind, enjoy a diverse range of musical genres, and simply soak in the Calgary summer atmosphere. Bring a blanket, grab some popcorn, and let the melodies wash over you. You might even discover your new favourite local band!
Speaking of discovery, August is a fantastic month for free art showings across the city –– starting with our own Visual & Media Art galleries. From Brendon Many Bears' "Ihnkanaitapstiwa" in the Ledge Gallery to Haniyyah Khan's "Finding Space" in the Lightbox Studio and Trajectories' "Ecomorphia" in the +15 Soundscape (one of the few multichannel sound galleries in Canada), artists are exhibiting and practicing their crafts in Arts Commons all summer long. Stop by and say hi!
Nickle Galleries at the University of Calgary are also presenting two compelling exhibitions running until August 22. "Where We Gather, The Land Speaks" features the work of three emerging Indigenous artists – Lucas Hale, Lori Scalplock, and Elijah Wells – exploring the Land's role in shaping identity and culture through diverse mediums like beadwork, quills, and sound. Simultaneously, "MoneyArt: Aesthetics of Currencies Across Times and Cultures" offers a look at the intersection of numismatics and art. Both exhibitions offer a chance to engage with thought-provoking ideas and experience the depth of artistic expression.
Another must-visit for contemporary art lovers is the Esker Foundation. Their current exhibitions, running until August 24th, include "Oliver Beer: Compositions for Mouths, Face and Hands," "Babak Golkar: When Sound Becomes Unsound," and "Caroline Monnet: Pizandawatc / The One Who Listens / Celui qui écoute." Esker Foundation consistently presents challenging and innovative works, and their free admission and programming make it highly accessible. Don't miss their Summer Community Night on Thursday, August 14 from 6pm to 8pm, which offers family-friendly exhibition tours, art-making activities, and free refreshments – a welcoming experience for all ages.
Beyond specific venues, keep an eye out for Calgary's lively summer festivals. While many have ticketed components, they often feature free stages, street performances, and cultural exhibits. GlobalFest, running from August 14 to 23 at Elliston Park, is renowned for its spectacular fireworks, but it also features the free OneWorld Festival. Celebrate Calgary's multicultural communities with pavilions, performances, international food, and live music from local groups around the world. It’s a sensory feast that allows you to experience a world of difference right here in our city.
Another exciting cultural celebration is Carifest, happening August 15 through 17. This annual festival promises an unforgettable weekend of vibrant festivities, including a Grand Parade and community events showcasing Caribbean culture, music, and vibes. It’s an explosion of colour and sound that truly embodies the spirit of summer.
We know the importance of community, of sharing our craft, and of finding inspiration in unexpected places. These free events offer just that – opportunities to connect with fellow creatives, witness the incredible talent flourishing in our city, and enrich our lives (without breaking the bank). So go forth, explore, and let Calgary ignite your own creative spark.
