Reliving the Magic: Our Favourite Moments from the 2024-2025 Season

Written by Dena Vahle | Jun 20, 2025 6:00:00 AM

When we think of important moments in life, we often try to capture them – mostly through photographs. A colourful, expressive second, frozen in time, waiting to be put into a photo album. In today's world, it's become a beloved trend on social media to do just that: a look back, a recap of our highest highs, a digital photo album full of moments we'd love to relive and share with the world.

As we step into the summer months, we're taking a page from that playbook to journey back through our incredible 2024-2025 season. Consider this our throwback moment, filled with the vibrant memories, powerful performances, and shared experiences that made this year truly unforgettable.

The Transformation of Arts Commons into Werklund Centre

The continuous transformation of Arts Commons into Werklund Centre was marked by a groundbreaking moment in November, when we kicked off the revitalization of Olympic Plaza. This was followed by the exciting unveiling of our new logo in March. Both milestones renew our commitment to creating an accessible, welcoming space for all and ensure the arts play a pivotal role at the centre of Calgary's civic life.

Tango Takes Over the Jack Singer Concert Hall

From Buenos Aires to Calgary, the Social Tango Project transported us through an electrifying glimpse into the rich history and cultural significance of tango. This wasn't just a show; the Jack Singer Concert Hall stage was transformed into an interactive dance floor, inviting guests to become part of the performance with a live tango lesson.

From International Icons to Community Partnerships

This season was marked by incredible collaborations and diverse programming, from the irresistible rhythms of Bob Marley (in collaboration with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Jones&Jones) that had everyone on their feet dancing, to the frosty fun of our Disco Blast Sunday Skate Party with Chinook Blast (in collaboration with Springboard). We excitedly partnered with Downstage and One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Rodeo to present the vibrant Hot Dyke Party, celebrating dykes, butch femmes, and queers of all sorts. And who could forget the boundary-pushing brilliance of Taylor Mac, a MacArthur Genius and Pulitzer Prize Finalist, who redefined the stage with their audacious and groundbreaking work.

Celebrating the Power of Women in Country

March found us celebrating Trailblazing Women of Country with an unforgettable performance featuring an all-women band on stage. This powerful show not only highlighted the strength of women in music but also paid tribute to the pioneers who paved the way: country music legends Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton. The concert featured the incredible talents of rising country stars Rissi Palmer and Kristina Train, who brought the signature songs and empowering stories of these iconic women to life.

Dr. Jane Goodall Inspires a City

It was an immense privilege to welcome the one and only Dr. Jane Goodall to the Jack Singer Concert Hall stage in April. Her visit offered a profound opportunity for our community to learn firsthand what it takes to protect our planet and preserve it for future generations. Her wisdom and passion left an indelible mark on all who attended.

The talk by Dr. Jane Goodall was riveting - something I will remember for the rest of my life. Listening to her speak was like witnessing history in motion. She is a true legend, not just in the field of primatology but in global conservation and humanitarian work." - Patron

A World of Wonder and Exploration

In May, the Arts ReimaginED Festival created a world where wonder, art, and creativity converged, fostering students' and educators’ imaginations alike. The summit, featuring keynote speaker Kid Koala, sparked crucial conversations about policy and the future of arts education. This broad impact was further amplified through the delivery of over 240 in-class and online workshops, reaching an incredible 6,500 students across Alberta.

TD Amplify Reaches New Heights

The TD Incubator program took a significant leap this year, hosting its first fellow from outside Calgary: Venezuelan-born and Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary performing artist Migguel Anggelo, who elevated the program to a new level, fostering connection, creativity, and inspiration among artists. Collaboration was at the forefront of the resulting four TD Amplify shows, creating truly unique, one-of-a-kind events for both patrons and artists alike.

From Looking Behind to Looking Ahead

While our 2024-2025 season comes to a close, we are looking ahead to an exciting 2025-26. From exploring Africa's vast wilderness to humming along with a beloved Disney princess, you don't want to miss Werklund Centre's inaugural season. Thank you for being a vital part of our story, and we can't wait to create even more goosebump moments in the year to come!
