Canadian National Jazz Orchestra: Premiere Performance

Conceived and produced right here in Calgary, the Canadian National Jazz Orchestra is a brand-new project showcasing the best in Canadian jazz, including musicians, composers, and arrangers. Canada has a rich history of developing elite jazz talents since the beginning of the art form, but there has never been a country-wide uniting of jazz artists on this scale. The Canadian National Jazz Orchestra will bring together our best from every corner of the nation to celebrate our world-class musicians in a manner that embodies their unique Canadian perspective and talents – together, on the same stage.

Under the artistic direction of multiple award-winning and world-renowned big band leader Christine Jensen, the Canadian National Jazz Orchestra will perform classic compositions, as well as new work inspired by the Canadian experience. Canadian National Jazz Orchestra: Premiere Performance will feature new works composed by Christine Jensen, Philippe Côté and Marianne Trudel from Quebec, Brian Dickinson from Ontario, Derrick Gardner from Manitoba, renowned expat Darcy James Argue based in New York and Jaelem Bhate – the inaugural Canadian National Jazz Orchestra Emerging Composer – from British Columbia.

Join Arts Commons Presents and the TD Jazz series to celebrate our homegrown jazz talent together on one stage, bringing the best that our country has to offer to the Jack Singer Concert Hall.

Arrive at 6:30 p.m. for a pre-show lobby performance from the JazzYYC Youth Lab Quintet.
