Arts Commons Unveils Improved Patron Experience Initiatives
CALGARY – With the start of the 2017-18 season, Arts Commons is pleased to unveil several new initiatives that will improve patron experience and continue to decrease the facility’s environmental impact overall.
Starting this September, Arts Commons has replaced all of the disposable coffee and plastic cups, cutlery, and napkins with at the theatre bars with biodegradable options, endeavoring to come as near as possible to a zero waste facility. Throughout the building, waste receptacles have been converted to compost, recycle, and landfill. This move is in line with the Arts Commons mandate to divert as much waste from landfills as possible, as was demonstrated by the reuse and refurbishment of old theatre seat backs into the acoustic ceiling of the Jack Singer Rehearsal Hall.
“Arts Commons has made it a priority over the last five years to decrease the environmental impact of our building through the use of water-wise plumbing and fixtures, replacement of lights with high efficiency technology, and new, more efficient cooling and heating of the building,” says Wes Jenkins, Director of Facility at Arts Commons. “In every way we seek creative and innovative ways to divert waste from the landfills and minimize our impact on the environment.”
Other patron experience improvements include a new Point-of-Sale system at all of the Arts Commons theatre bars, replacing the previous cash only system, a complete refurbishment of the Jack Singer Concert Hall with new seats, flooring, house lighting, and added comforts such as cup holders (available on most seats), the upgrade of the hearing assistance equipment in the Jack Singer Concert Hall, Max Bell Theatre, and Martha Cohen Theatre, and the installation of hearing assistance equipment in the Engineered Air Theatre and Big Secret Theatre.
