Nimalan Yoganathan - Concrete Dub: Cagean Sound Clash in Babylon

Location: +15 Hallway (Near Alberta Theatre Projects and Theatre Calgary offices in Arts Commons)
Date: January 14 to April 30, 2015
Artist Reception: February 12, 5:00-8:00pm

Arts Commons brings a new sound installation to the +15 Soundscape starting January 14th, 2015.  Dub Concrete, created by sound artist/musician and Soundasaurus alumini, Nimalan Yoganathan, is a multi-channel sound installation that explores early Jamaican and British dub/reggae culture.

“My installation attempts to challenge the trivialization of traditional dub music as merely an ‘urban’ form of entertainment,” says musician Nimalan Yoganathan.

“I re-appropriate the dub genre by replacing its traditional instrumentation and sound effects with digital rhythms and textures as well as samples from field recordings I gathered in Nunavik, the Brazilian Amazon, and Southeast Asia. I hope to create a soundscape that destabilizes not only musical categorizations but also international and cultural borders.”

As visitors walk through the +15 walkway, they will hear beats and electronic gestures projecting from the speakers to form a pastiche of synthesized music and natural sounds including Arctic winds and underwater recordings of Amazonian dolphins superimposed over each other.
