Arts Commons Presents
The +15 Soundscape
A Moment of Quiet Reflection
Location: +15 Hallway (Near Alberta Theatre Projects and Theatre Calgary offices in Arts Commons)
Arts Commons Presents brings a new media art sound installation to the +15 hallway that will take you on a journey of meditation. This 15-speaker multiambient music installation was designed specifically for the Arts Commons +15 Walkway and is dedicated to the memory of Richard McDowell and Michael Green.
Date: March 1 - June 29, 2018
Artist Reception: Happenings 12 in Upper Centre Court at Arts Commons on Monday, May 14 from 6-9pm
This is a meditation. It is the eye of the storm. It is all about finding a moment of quiet reflection within your busy day. Repetitive bass and piano notes are your constant breathing and heartbeat. Field recordings from downtown Calgary like crosswalk beeps and C-trains ebb and flow and are reflected in the synthesizer tracks that move in and out like waves. Other synthesizer tracks were inspired by winds blowing through the metal "Trees" structures on Stephen Avenue Walk. The bells are from Ohama's 2014 High Performance Rodeo installation which was the first original composition written specifically for the Calgary Tower Carillon. The electronic arpeggiated phrases represent your own thoughts. They appear and leave naturally as you listen, reflect and then continue on your journey.
Supplemental sound files are available for free at http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/ohama
Listeners are encouraged to play the audio file of Ohama's Reflection and walk the installation to further enhance the multiambient experience.
Ohama is an electronic recording artist based in Western Canada who bought his first synthesizer in 1975 at the age of fifteen. Although he has a world-wide following, he remains relatively unknown in his home province and has been called "Alberta's Best Kept Musical Secret" by both the Calgary Herald and Earshot Magazine. He's the only Canadian to appear on the highly regarded Stones Throw/Minimal Wave Records compilations "The Minimal Wave Tapes" and is recognized as one of Canada's synthesizer/minimal techno pioneers.
The Arts Commons +15 Soundscape is a unique multichannel sound system that provides sound art opportunities to local and national sound artists, which is available for passersby to freely experience. Arts Commons has curated the 16-17 season of the +15 Soundscape program to showcase 3 new soundscapes created by aboriginal identified artists.
