“I think this is probably the most important theatre production that I’ve seen all year. It had me on the edge of my seat, I was completely speechless after it was done but haven’t stopped talking about it since.”
— Amanda Parris, CBC Radio Q
A raw, intimate, and timely exploration of queer male Blackness. Black Boys is created from the lives of three people seeking a deeper understanding of themselves, of each other and of how they encounter the world. As they explore their unique identities on stage, they subvert the ways in which gender, sexuality, and race are performed. Theatrical and intimate,
Black Boys weaves together the ensemble’s own personal stories in search of an integrated self and a radical imagination.
Established in 1979, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is the largest and longest running queer theatre in the world. It’s home in the heart of Toronto’s Church-Wellesley village is a leading destination for alternative theatre and a world leader in developing queer voices and stories for the stage.
Saga Collectif was formed in 2012 to confront issues of race, sexuality, and gender through a complex and passionate exploration of Blackness and masculinity in raw and unapologetic terms.
“As provocative as it is entertaining… a metatheatrical experience that’ll reinvigorate your love for live theatre.”
— Raymond Helkio, The Reading Salon
“Genre-defining... This is an exceptional, powerful, and quite delightful piece of work. I feel lucky and grateful to have been able to see it, and I predict you will be too.”
— S. Bear Bergman, Mooney on Theatre
